The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra will hold its annual Summer Music Camp for students, part of its Symphony Kids initiative, June 15-26 at Punta Gorda Middle School. For the first time, dates and times are coordinated with the Charlotte Players’ Kids Onstage Summer Drama Camp, which takes place at the adjacent Charlotte Performing Arts Center.
The orchestra’s music sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday for grades 7-12. Sessions for children in grades 1-6 will be held from 1-4 p.m.
Punta Gorda Middle School is at 1001 Education Ave., Punta Gorda.
Times for the Kids on Stage camp have been coordinated to allow interested students an all-day experience in drama and music.
Leading the music camp will be Scott Courtney, a percussionist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Punta Gorda Middle School band director.
Music instruction involves beginning and advanced instruments for band and orchestra, and includes ensemble, chorus, rhythm and movement and music theory and technology. Musical experience is not necessary. Classes will be divided by experience and age. A limited number of instruments will be supplied, but students are encouraged to bring their own. Daily snacks and a T-shirt will be provided.
A recital and reception for parents, friends and family concludes the camp experience.
The cost of Summer Music Camp is $150 per child and $140 for each sibling. Tuition assistance is available.
